Summer 2018

Shot of Scotch New York City

It’s Highland Games Season!

Highland games combine sport, fun and culture in a uniquely Scottish style and take place every weekend in the summer. From May to September you can get in on the action all across the northern hemisphere, with dozens of games being held across the US and games as far away as Norway, Germany and Brazil.

Scotland is home to the Highland Games of course with over 80 taking place across the country.  The Cowal Highland Gathering is the most famous of them all in the dancing world as they host the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing World Championships each year.

Dancers give dazzling displays of fancy footwork in the traditional Highland dances, competing for the most prestigious titles.  The Cowal Highland Gathering is renowned for the quality of its Highland dancing, drawing in the best performers from around the globe as they compete to be world champion.  The good news is that you don’t even need to travel to catch all the splendour, events will be streamed live August 23rd - 25th.

If you prefer to catch the action live, come and see Shot of Scotch at the Long Island Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Westbury, New York on August 25th.  New York’s premier dancers will be performing, teaching and conducting a raffle with exciting prizes.

Fusion! Fusion! Fusion!

It's no secret that we love a good cultural mashup and this season we've had the pleasure to present three of our existing favourites and one new creation! In the past month we've revised our Bhangra, Taiko and Serbian fusions with the Royal Academy of Bhangra, Onibana Taiko and Skud Zavicaj. We brought both the Bhangra and Taiko fusions to the BC Highland Games in Coquitlam on June 16 and were guest performers at Skud Zavicaj's year-end show June 29 at the Cultch Theatre in East Vancouver. If you missed all of those, you can still catch us perform our Taiko Highland fusion a the Powell Street Festival on Aug 4th!

"Our goal in creating a fusion is to stay true to the integrity of each cultural art form, but to play with the commonalities in order to create something new and exciting" says SoS Van artistic director Susan Nase. The newest of our fusions was created for Small Stage's Summer Series on Robson and included live music with bagpipes and dhol. See the video HERE!

Shot of Scotch Vancouver

Celebrating 5 Years of Shot of Scotch in Vancouver!

What a tremendous evening we had celebrating our 5th Anniversary on Mar 3, 2018! Our ceilidh was sold out well in advance and was packed with dance, music, laughter, friends and love. Wow - what a night! We are so grateful to have had so many guest performers join us for the evening including Blackthorn, the Vancouver Police Pipe Band, the Royal Academy of Bhangra, Onibana Taiko and Alison Moen who led us all in ceilidh dancing.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our ceilidh, to all of our tireless volunteers who helped it to run so smoothly, to Manto Artworks for capturing so many beautiful moments from the evening on camera, and to all of our supporters who have helped us in so many ways year round to become the company we are today. We couldn't do this without you - THANK YOU!! Cheers to 5 years!! Click HERE to see our photo gallery of the evening!

Tartan Week in New York City: Are you ready?

The 20th anniversary of Tartan Week in NYC is fast approaching and Shot of Scotch NYC can’t wait for the festivities to begin! This year, we will be performing at the Pre-Parade Ceilidh on Friday, April 6th, and at Bryant Park before the parade on April 7th. And of course, you can catch us in the parade on 6th avenue on the afternoon of April 7th, sharing our love of Highland dancing with the people of New York City and people from around the world!

Tartan Week started in 1998 after the United States Senate declared April 6th National Tartan Day, a day to celebrate Scottish culture. Since then Tartan Week has grown to include many events throughout New York City to celebrate the music, dance, and other parts of Scottish culture. This year some of these events will include things like ceilidhs, book signings, author talks, teas, whisky tastings, genealogy research help and other exciting events. If you’re in the New York City area be sure to stop by and see us dancing!

Quote of the season:

I dance out of need as much as love. If I don’t move through time and space to music something is absent from my life. Often I can’t hold myself back, and in my kitchen, a hallway, a public space I will start to dance—for me it is innate."

Winter 2017

Shot of Scotch Vancouver

SoS Van 2016 Year in Review

Merci 2016, Hello 2017!!

2016 was a busy year for us in Vancouver! We worked on collaborations old and new with the Royal Academy of Bhangra and the Seaforth Highlanders, put in countless hours of rehearsal at The Dance Centre, taught full adult recreational classes year-round, hosted two Whisky Fling fundraisers, danced at a scores of local festivals, events, parades and we even danced in the pouring rain twice! (A regular hazard of dancing outdoors in Vancouver!) Perhaps the jewel of 2016 though was our trip to Paris in October to perform and teach highland dance at the 8th Annual International Body Music Festival.

The IBMF is truly a gathering of world cultures. Over 200 festival-goers and artists from all over France, around the world were in attendance: Canada, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, USA, Finland, Italy, Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Czech Republic, Germany and more. We were one of only three Canadian companies. Four members of SoS Vancouver, including Artistic Director and choreographer Susan Nase traveled to Paris to teach a master class of the percussive elements of Scottish highland dance as well as to present the original choreography of “Highland Dance Body Music."

Scottish Highland dancing has never been presented at this festival before. There was tremendous interest from the global group of students in attendance at the workshop to not only learn the Scottish jig dance steps, but also to absorb the history of the dance. The class ended with a long question and answer period with great questions asked and much discussion on the cultural roots of the Scottish dance form and it’s connection to Canada. It was wonderful to share this information with such a diverse and global community! The performances went equally well, with many audience members commenting on how unique, innovative and genuine the work presented was.

With such a busy schedule, 2016 really flew by and it's hard to believe we are already ringing in 2017! We've no plans to slow down this year though. We're starting the year off with January packed full of Robbie Burns celebrations and the Chinese New Year Parade. A heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters in 2016 and we are looking forward to more adventures in Scottish dance in 2017. Happy New Year!!

See pictures from our trip to the IBMF in Paris HERE!

Shot of Scotch New York City

SoS NYC 2016 Year in Review
2016 was a year of tremendous growth and joy for Shot of Scotch NYC. This year, we celebrated a birth, a wedding, impressive career, educational growth, an adorable new kitten, as well as celebrating The Shot of Scotch NYC 5 year anniversary in March at St. Andrew's Restaurant.
We danced through all these changes and were thrilled to participate in New York City's Tartan Week celebrations, including dancing two days at Ellis Island with the Clan Currie Society and marching down 5th Avenue at the annual Tartan Day Parade, led by Parade Marshall Sam Heughan of Outlander. We were proud to present an all-new choreography at Dixon Place's 8 in Show. Most recently we performed at the Sinterklass Festival in Rhinebeck, New York and at the Miracle on Madison celebration in Manhattan, and had the whole group together to perform at the Lincoln Square Winter’s Eve Festival.

As a group we have much to celebrate. Though, as individuals we have thrived in NYC, and well:

Kendra and her husband Ryan celebrated the birth of their first child this year. Campbell is our premier Shot of Scotch NYC baby and we are thrilled to welcome her into our arms. She enjoys practicing her Irish Jig face and has better turnout than any of us. It's no wonder, as Kendra was dancing well into her 8th month of pregnancy and began teaching with Monroe School of Highland Dance again when Campbell was a few weeks old.

Abi married the dashing Babak at a gorgeous ceremony at the Brooklyn Winery in August. The newlyweds honeymooned in Lagos, Portugal with Abi returning looking tanned and more relaxed than anybody in New York City. Abi is also celebrating her admittance to Hunter Graduate School for the Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practioner program- may her honeymoon relaxation get her through her studies ahead!

Anna graduated this year with a Professional Studies Diploma in Bassoon Performance from Mannes College The New School for Music and has since been hired as Faculty to the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory. Anna played a number of awesome performances for her work as a professional Bassoonist and also started the New York City School of Scottish Dance.

Annelise began a new position as the Outreach and Advocacy Counselor at the Central Queens YM&YWHA and pet a lot, and we mean a lot, of dogs in 2016.

Libby was thrilled to begin a new position as a Contracts Administrator at Buzzfeed this year. She has seen the Try Guys from a distance but has not met them yet; we're holding onto our hopes for 2017.

Blair is now halfway through her 3rd year at Juilliard. This summer she went to Canada for the Banff Music Festival where she studied Bassoon performance, and where she went on hikes nearly every day. Blair also adopted the beautiful kitten Luna this year; Luna enjoys cuddling, watching videos of birds, and kills it at the Snapchat filter game.

Emily was crowned the Queen of Ice Cream in 2016 during her visit to the new Museum of Ice Cream in New York City. She continues to work her dream job marketing children's books, and also became the proudest aunt ever to the adorable Magnolia, the Duchess of Ice Cream.

Marjorie enjoyed a wonderful vacation to Scotland and Ireland this year, where she danced with the Heart of Scotland dancers in Edinburgh. She says she did not see Nessie but admits to seeing a strange blur out of the corner of her eye while on the lake. Who knows what that could have been...

We are enormously grateful for all these opportunities to present Scottish dance and culture and are overjoyed by all the gifts 2016 has given us. Thank you for your support this last year and we enthusiastically look ahead to the promise of 2017.

With love from all of us at Shot of Scotch NYC,

Blair, Emily, Libby, Kendra, Abi, Marjorie, Annelise, Anna and Rachel

Summer 2016

Shot of Scotch Vancouver

We’re Going to Paris!

Shot of Scotch Vancouver has been invited to present original choreography at the International Body Music Festival (IBMF) in Paris France! This is a gathering of world-class artists from across the globe, taking place in Oct 2016. The IBMF specifically presents artists who create music using their bodies alone. This includes vocalists, dancers and body percussionists. This year’s line up includes artists from France, Brazil, Turkey, USA, Greece, Spain, Austria, Cuba, Columbia, Denmark, and South Africa to name a few! Shot of Scotch Vancouver will be one of only three Canadian companies attending this year’s festival. At the IBMF, we will present our ground breaking original Shot of Scotch Body Music Suite, something unique and unseen before. This is the creation of our Artistic Director Susan Nase, also a professional tap dancer and vocalist. In addition to performing, we will teach a master class of Scottish highland dances.

The suite shares a strong demonstration of our traditional roots and then strays from those roots to play in the world of body music. Traditionally, highland dance is accompanied by bagpipe music making it a primarily visual art form. The delicate sounds of the brushing of the feet, the stomp of the jig shoe, the slide of the foot along the leg, are left for rehearsal rooms only. It was these “unheard” sounds that inspired director Susan Nase to create the Shot of Scotch Body Music Suite. What would happen if highland dance was composed based on the rhythms made by our footwork? The suite explores this idea and also expands to the idea of accompanying the visual highland dance with vocals, body percussion and traditional Scottish songs.

We are thrilled to be part of this festival because the IBMF provides us the opportunity to represent and promote Canada and Scottish Highland dancing at an International artistic event. Not only will we be able to showcase our culture, our passions and our roots, but we will also have the opportunity to collaborate, mingle, exchange, and learn from internationally renowned artists. The open mic night, various workshops and events allow us to exchange in a unique and rare way, which could lead to future collaborative projects at the international level.

We see this invitation as a clear indication that Shot of Scotch Vancouver has increasing success and growth, and that we are gaining international attention and exposure. Stay tuned for updates on our preparations for this festival! Sponsorship opportunities are available so please contact us if interested in helping us get to Paris. Thank you for your continued support!! See you in Paris!!

Our Competition Memories

The summer is in full swing and for highland dancers that can only mean one thing, Competition Season! We practice all year round and finally put all our hard work on display at Highland Games and competitions all over the world. Our choreographer, Emily Ritter, has fond memories of traveling all the way to Scotland with her family to compete. She even got her picture in a local Scottish newspaper! Kendra Monroe, Shot of Scotch co-founder and creative director, traveled with her sister and dance friends to the 1994 Southeast Regional competition in Savannah, GA. She walked away with awesome memories of goofing off on River Street with her fellow dancers as well as a trophy, which qualified her for Nationals!

While competition days are always full of fun, they don’t always go smoothly. Unpredictable weather and injuries can put a damper on any dancer’s day. Anna Fitzgerald, our performance coordinator, was competing in the Fling at 10 or 11 years old and landed on a tac. It went right through her ghillie into her foot, she explains, “after several painful hops on it, I stopped dancing, started crying, and ran/hobbled off the stage.” Luckily an understanding judge let her give it a second try!

Whether the day is full of laughter or tears, competition days are always memorable! We are excited to congratulate Shot of Scotch Dancer, Marjorie Stewart, who competed last month at the Rhode Island Scottish Highland Festival at age 46 and plans to continue competing. We can’t wait to hear about all of the stories she and her fellow Shot of Scotch members make in the years to come!

Quote of the month:

"You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.”
