Highland Games

Celebrating CULTURE in June!

Sunny days are here and we are in full rehearsal mode for two exciting events this month!

First up on Saturday June 18 we return to the Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam for the BC Highland Games!  We'll be performing around 2:00 pm and spending the rest of the day at our booth. Come say hello! This is one of our favourite days of the year and we hope to see many of you there! Enjoy a full day of Scottish culture - take in the bagpipes, drums, dancing, ceilidh music, sights, sounds and flavors of Scotland!

There will be no rest for us afterwards though - On Sunday June 19 we'll be celebrating multiculturalism at the North Shore Folkfest! It's held at the Centennial Theatre (2300 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver) and the performance begins at 7:00 pm. We're teaming up with the JP Fell Pipe Band to present some traditional Scottish dances as well as presenting our own featured choreography. The evening will be filled with top caliber cultural performances providing an unforgettable multicultural show, admission by donation!

It's Never Too Late To Congratulate!

Just last weekend one of our Premier dancers, Anna Fitzgerald, competed in the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina! Growing up in Cary, NC, going to Grandfather Mountain was a staple for Anna and her family. So after moving to NYC last year, going back home to compete was especially nostalgic this time. Anna was even able to reunite with the competition coordinators Pat Johnston and Amy Mooney. Anna credits Pat for helping her return to the world of Highland Dance and she couldn’t be more grateful for Pat’s lasting influence on her dancing career!

Despite the free sunburn, Anna had a wonderful time competing in the three-day event! She competed in the Pre-Championship on Friday and placed in all four events! She also competed in the National Dances on Sunday and placed in the Jig! Go Anna! All of your hard work and dedication to this sport has really paid off, and everyone at Shot of Scotch NYC is so proud of your accomplishments!

Shot of Scotch Vancouver: Choreography - "Ceilidh-Ready"

Recently performed at the BC Highland Games "Ceilidh-Ready" was choreographed in 2015 by Emma Reid and Kathleen Hall. The dance plays with the typical idea of balance and symmetry in highland dancing -- you'll see that sometimes, the dancers are in sync with each other, while other times, they are deliberately doing the opposite movements.

The dance was awarded first prize at both the Bellingham indoor competition in February and the Bellingham Highland Games in June, and has been performed for several audiences throughout the lower mainland. Special thanks to Kate McRae for her assistance in polishing this piece.

BC Highland Games - 2015

Shot of Scotch Vancouver participated in the BC Highland Games this past weekend and we had so much fun!! Seven of our Dancers came out to dance at a 12:30pm performance on the main stage. We presented a mix of traditional and contemporary choreography showing off what our Premier level dancers can do!

We also had a the pleasure of running a booth all day located next to the main stage across from Tartan Town. Many many people came by to talk dance and highland culture. It was so great to see so many new people who had heard about through the media and wanted to experience a real highland event. We even had a little Haggis to hang out with that the kids where so excited to find.

The games themselves where spectacular with the full massed bands, pipes & drums solo and band competitions, competitive highland dance, heavy weights, and even fencing! Congrats to all competitors and special thanks to the organizers.

Check out our Flicker Album for more photos of the day!

Bellingham Highland Games - 2015

The Bellingham Highland Games where this past Sunday (June 7th) and dancers from Shot of Scotch and Ward-McRae where out in force competing in the national and choreography dance categories. Two of our SoS dancers Emma Reid and Kathleen Hall placed in the Sailors Hornpipe in the Premier 19 & Over Category; Emma 6th, and Kathleen 4th!!!

Emma, Kathleen, and Sarah Grant (SoS dancers) also competed in a duo and group choreography as part of Ward-McRae school of highland dance! Both choreographies placed first!

Congratulations to all the dancers, your hard work and practice totally paid off! We can't wait for the next games.
