Open Call Auditions - Q&A

Are you thinking about applying to join Shot of Scotch Vancouver? Do you have questions for us about your application and joining SoS Van? Let us help you by answering some commons ones we've received! If you have other questions, please contact us!

SoS Studio PBD pic compressed.jpg

As a member of SoS Van, you'll have the opportunity to dance at world-class events, be part of ground breaking choreographies, work with pipe bands and live musicians on a regular basis, and be a part of a dedicated awesome team of dancers. We are a professional performance company which means you will be paid for your talents. Since we formed 5 years ago, we've performed all over the lower mainland BC as well as travelled to Paris, NYC, Nanchang China, Washington state and Vancouver Island!

You have until May 31st to send us your application! All audition application details can be found HERE.

Q: When you say "Premier-Level" required, what does that mean?

A: We ask that all dancers applying are at a "premier level" - however we say that without regard to your competitive history. What we require is that all dancers are very familiar with the traditional premier dances (including nationals, jigs and hornpipes) and with a little training can get into solid technical shape. We do not expect championship form but cannot take time in rehearsals to teach steps that a premier level dancer would already know. The amount of time spent in a premier category while competing (or not competing) isn't important to us.

Q: I am a currently a competitive dancer, can I still apply?

A: This depends on the level of focus you have on your competitions. If you are competing regularly and are mainly focused on championships, we think that's fantastic and fully support you doing it - but we would prefer you apply to join us after you have hung up your championship ghillies. We are looking for dancers that are fully committed to performance dance (at a high technical level) and won't feel too stretched between competition and SoS Van projects. That certainly doesn't mean that you can't still enter a competition here or there just for fun, but we want your main highland project to be working with SoS Van.

Q: What if I have other dance training? Do you want to know about that?

A: Other dance training and performance experience is definitely an asset! Please tell us all about your training on the application form.

Q: How much of a time commitment do you expect from an Apprentice member?

A: We currently rehearse once per week on Wednesday evenings in downtown Vancouver. Apprentice members are given more flexibility in attendance than our full members, but we would like for them to attend as frequently as possible. Ideally our apprentice members are in training to take on full member positions. Occasionally extra rehearsals are needed to prepare for special performances, but we know everyone is very busy and try to get as much done on Wednesday nights as possible. We try to be very flexible to allow for members that travel a lot or just have very busy schedules. We are currently doing at least 1-2 performances a month, but not all members attend every performance.

Q: I have a regular day job - is that a problem?

A: Having a dedicated daytime work schedule is not at all a problem! We rarely do have day time commitments and when we do, there are a few of us that have more flexible schedules. Knowing in advance when you are available or not is what's most important.

SoS Van Visits NYC for Tartan Week!!

SoS Van in NYC Tartan Week Compressed.jpg

What better way to celebrate the 20th Annual NYC Tartan Week than by reuniting the NYC and Vancouver branches of Shot of Scotch?! A couple of the Vancouver dancers took a trip to NYC earlier this month to perform and soak in all the Tartan Week festivities alongside the SoS NYC dancers and other visiting guests including the Celtic Cross Dancers from Ottawa. We had a fabulous time performing at the Pre-Parade Ceilidh, at Bryant Park and of course, marching in the Tartan Day Parade along 6th Avenue! We even snuck in a day or so of tourist fun around the city. :) Huge thank you to the SoS NYC team for inviting and hosting us - we had a wonderful time and hope to reunite again soon... maybe in Vancouver next time??!

Spring 2018

Shot of Scotch Vancouver

Celebrating 5 Years of Shot of Scotch in Vancouver!

What a tremendous evening we had celebrating our 5th Anniversary on Mar 3, 2018! Our ceilidh was sold out well in advance and was packed with dance, music, laughter, friends and love. Wow - what a night! We are so grateful to have had so many guest performers join us for the evening including Blackthorn, the Vancouver Police Pipe Band, the Royal Academy of Bhangra, Onibana Taiko and Alison Moen who led us all in ceilidh dancing.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our ceilidh, to all of our tireless volunteers who helped it to run so smoothly, to Manto Artworks for capturing so many beautiful moments from the evening on camera, and to all of our supporters who have helped us in so many ways year round to become the company we are today. We couldn't do this without you - THANK YOU!! Cheers to 5 years!! Click HERE to see our photo gallery of the evening!

Shot of Scotch New York City

Tartan Week in New York City: Are you ready?

The 20th anniversary of Tartan Week in NYC is fast approaching and Shot of Scotch NYC can’t wait for the festivities to begin! This year, we will be performing at the Pre-Parade Ceilidh on Friday, April 6th, and at Bryant Park before the parade on April 7th. And of course, you can catch us in the parade on 6th avenue on the afternoon of April 7th, sharing our love of Highland dancing with the people of New York City and people from around the world!

Tartan Week started in 1998 after the United States Senate declared April 6th National Tartan Day, a day to celebrate Scottish culture. Since then Tartan Week has grown to include many events throughout New York City to celebrate the music, dance, and other parts of Scottish culture. This year some of these events will include things like ceilidhs, book signings, author talks, teas, whisky tastings, genealogy research help and other exciting events. If you’re in the New York City area be sure to stop by and see us dancing!

SoS Vancouver Open Call Auditions!

Calling all dancers!

Interested in joining Shot of Scotch Vancouver as a member?

Point at Barre SoS compressed.jpg

Are you a highland dancer who has reached premier-level quality (regardless of prior competitive history) and is currently interested in focusing more on performance than competition? We’d love to meet you! We have regular weekly practices on Wednesday evenings in downtown Vancouver and are currently accepting submissions for new apprentice company members!

Ideal SoS Van members are enthusiastic about performance and excellence in dance, and are open to exploring new avenues of expression through traditional Scottish dance. Though our dancers must maintain a level of fitness to enable them to perform at a high standard, we strongly encourage dancers both actively dancing and those who have taken a short break from premier level dance to apply. We are looking for a combination of technique and performance qualities.

We are currently looking for 2 dancers who are excited to join our professional dance company this summer. We perform regularly across the lower mainland and travel internationally as well. In the past several years we have performed in the USA, Paris and China. Dancers are paid for their work and get to perform at a variety of events ranging from very traditional to innovative and contemporary. Join our fabulous team of performers!

All interested dancers please send the following to

1. Unlisted YouTube video link of you dancing a 4 step highland fling. No costume needed; rehearsal clothes are fine.

2. Application form submitted online

Questions? Send them to us at

Deadline: May 31, 2018
