Shot of Scotch New York City

Mohonk Mountain House: Scottish Weekend

January 26-28 marks the sixth year, SoS NYC will be invited back to share it's passion of Highland Dance along side other Scottish artists during this celebratory weekend. We hope to see you at the beautiful backdrop, Mohonk Mountain House, as we celebrate Robert Burns and this years theme of Neil Gow.
"The halls of the Mountain House echo with the sound of bagpipes, as the Mohonk grounds transform into the highlands of Scotland! Our Scottish Weekend features award-winning musicians, concerts, Scotch whisky tasting, the “Address to the Haggis”, a ceilidh, and opportunities to participate and learn about Scottish music, Scottish country dance, bagpipe-playing, Scottish Highland games, and kilt-making. Our MC and historian, Thomas Keith, will be giving a lecture on Robert Burns as well as hosting our classic Scottish concert."
If you are unable to make it to Mohonk, please see our other upcoming performances at the bottom of this newsletter!

Quote of the season:

I dance out of need as much as love. If I don’t move through time and space to music something is absent from my life. Often I can’t hold myself back, and in my kitchen, a hallway, a public space I will start to dance—for me it is innate."

- Sarah Lamb, Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet

Highland Dance in South America!

c74ccc_41e9dc24e0a94e87864fb1a85bf28832~mv2_d_1200_1800_s_2.jpg

Our Artistic Director Susan Nase is packing her bags again! She is thrilled to have been invited to Santiago, Chile next week to teach workshops and adjudicate at the 7th South American Pipe Band Gathering! There are 12 bands from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay participating in the event. At this gathering, unlike a traditional (SOBHD) highland dance completion the dancers will join the pipe band as full members - much like our recent collaborations with the Vancouver Pipe Band. The dancers have created choreography to match the music played by the band and will be judged on this performance rather than on traditional dances. The event runs for several intense days of workshops, performance, competition and finishes with a massed bands. The enthusiasm and excitement around this event by the bands in South America is contagious. We can't wait to see what they're working on!
