Extra Extra! We're travelling to China!!

Last January we danced in Chinatown, and we are thrilled to announce that next September we will dance in China!! We are so excited to travel with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band to perform at the 5th Annual China Nanchang International Military Tattoo! This is an incredible opportunity for us to both choreograph and perform at an event that has seen upwards of 20 international military bands annually.

Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi province and has a 2200-year old history. What an amazing place to dance!!

8 Shot of Scotch Vancouver dancers will be packing their bags, kilts and ghillies in September and we couldn't be happier than to share this adventure with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band - huge thank you to them for inviting us to come along on this trip! As the world’s oldest, continuous serving police pipe band and official band of the City of Vancouver, with a regional population in excess of 2.5 million people, they are continually called upon to play for charity and community events, visiting royalty, heads of state and celebrities.

We are already hard at work collaborating with the band to create a spectacular new set and choreography to showcase at this world-class event but we need some help to get our dancers to this stage. If you are able, please consider supporting our GoFundMe campaign to help us cover the travel and visa costs of all dancers. Thank you always for your support and for helping us spread our love for Scottish dance, culture and exchange across the globe!

We're Celebrating Canada Day... Bhangra Highland Style!

Canada turns 150 tomorrow and we're celebrating the best way we know how... with multiculturalism!! We're sharing the Celebration Stage at Exhibition Hall A inside Canada Place tomorrow at 5 pm with the Royal Academy of Bhangra!

Shot of Scotch Vancouver and the Royal Academy of Bhangra first started working together in 2013 and the Bhangra Highland Fusion has become a favourite ongoing project for both our companies ever since. Though coming from vastly different cultures, we find common ground between Scottish Highland Dance and Punjabi Bhangra through the joy of dance. Both dance forms require extraordinary strength, endurance, agility and grace. This project is rooted in multiculturalism, exchange, learning, understanding and sharing - all core Canadian values!

You might have noticed our fusion project pop up on your Facebook feed lately - the video taken from our performance at the BC Highland Games has gone viral with nearly 1 million views to date, over 15 thousand shares and thousands of amazing likes, loves and comments! We are so proud to represent Canada and Highland dancing in this unique and exciting way!

Join us tomorrow at Canada Place as we celebrate this amazing country we live, dance and celebrate culture in!

Spring 2017

Shot of Scotch New York City

Allow me to introduce myself...

A guest column by our newest member, Myra Harrison

For as long as I remember, I have been highland dancing. I grew up in Hamilton Ontario Canada and began private lessons with my older sister when I was 3. Shortly after, I began dancing at Sandra Bald Jones Dance studio. Though, I was not a competitive dancer, I worked hard to learn as much as I could and completed my SDTA medal tests to achieve bronze through Scottish Award 5 over the years. I began performing with the Schiehallion Dancers, a dance troupe formed of people from the studio, taking part in both smaller shows and large performances like the Canadian International Military Tattoo. I also had the opportunity to travel with the group to Virginia where we collaborated with local and Scottish teams on a performance in the Tattoo there. Some of my favourite dance memories are from that trip to Virginia, where I had the chance to spend a week with the team and meet people from all over the world.

I stopped dancing when I moved out for University in 2010 and just picked it back up when I moved to New York City in the summer of 2016. New York is an amazing city with so many people here who come from very different backgrounds and hometowns. It is no surprise that I found this group of people who are passionate about performing highland dance. I was very excited to simply find adult classes with MSHD in NYC but to also find a performance team was the cherry on the cake. I am eager to be getting back the technique I had before I stopped dancing, though it definitely has been a challenge. I am so unbelievably grateful to have met the people I have had the pleasure of dancing with, and am excited to make more dance memories.

NEW WORKSHOPS!
Have you always wanted to try Highland dancing as an adult, but didn't know where to begin? We are thrilled to offer a 4-week Absolute Beginner workshop to get you started! In this workshop, we'll go through all the basic arm and feet positions, introduce your body to the basic movements of highland dance and work slowly through a 4-step Highland Fling! After the 4 weeks, you'll be prepared and confident enough to join our regular Sunday beginner/novice classes. The Absolute Beginner workshop classes will be taught by SoS Vancouver Artistic Director Susan Nase and run Sundays 2:00-3:30 pm throughout April.

For those dancers already in the highland dance swing of things, we've got a workshop to help you take your dancing to the next level! Shot of Scotch Vancouver founding member Alison Ward will be teaching Core and Cardio for Highland Dancers on Tuesdays throughout Apr and May! Let's move!! The focus will be on stamina, strength and improving the dances you already know! Alison has been practicing Pilates since 2000 and teaching as a certified instructor since 2006. In addition, Alison is a fully qualified Highland Dance Instructor and has over 30 years of various dance and theatre experience. As a competitor, she trained at a high championship level and won several titles at provincial, national and international levels. Her ability to cross train with Pilates has allowed her to continue dancing at a professional level well into her thirties.
